Spray Foam Genie Charlotte – Types of Attic Insulation
Many homeowners don’t think about their attics unless there’s a problem with it, but insulating an attic can dramatically reduce your energy bills and make your home more comfortable. This is especially true in Charlotte’s extreme climate, where good insulation can keep your AC and heating systems from working overtime to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature.
There are several types of attic insulation, with fiberglass batts being the most commonly used. They are inexpensive, easily available and effective at blocking airflow through the attic. They do, however, contain glass fibers that can be harmful to skin and lungs, so you should wear gloves and a mask when handling them.
Spray Foam vs. Fiberglass: Which Insulation Works Best?
Another option is loose-fill insulation, also called blown-in insulation. This is manufactured from recycled materials such as cellulose, mineral wool or shredded newspaper and cardboard. It is a better choice for those who prefer to use green products in their home. It can be installed on top of fiberglass batts, but you should expect some settling and loss of insulative value over time.
Rigid foam insulation is also available for those who wish to increase the insulative value of their attic. It is made of panels or boards that are cut to fit between the attic joists and are often affixed to the attic floor with a foam sealant. This type of insulation can be three times as expensive as fiberglass, but it offers more flexibility when you need to access the attic or run new venting through it.
